Butembo is a sprawling city of approximately 1 million people in the North Kivu Province, great lakes region, bordering Uganda and Rwanda. It is a two hour drive south from the city of Beni which has a population of approximately 500 thousand. 8 hours south of Butembo is the city of Goma, another city of 1 million. Butembo only has only a few paved roads and feels like a large village as most of the construction is only 3 storeys high and 6 storeys in the downtown. The city is growing and construction can be seen wherever you turn. Unfortunately it is not often of good quality but we have discovered in our market research that people are not necessarily happy with the status quo.
Construction is often of poor quality leading to structural, health, functional, and aesthetic challenges. Through a survey we discovered twelve problems that are common in buildings here, the top three being humidity that comes up from the ground, mold growth, and poor quality light fixtures that have to be replaced often. We also conducted a survey to determine the defects in steel and wood products. Steel products are often poorly assembled, have poor quality hardware, and are poorly finished which results in the product corroding quickly. The wood used in products is rarely dried first causing warping and cracking after the product has already been purchased and installed. The problem is sometimes aesthetic or in the case of doors and windows, inhibits their proper functioning. For both steel and wood, poor quality hardware is used that break often..
